...Because it's psychologicaly easier blaming third parties than facing mistakes and maybe adjusting worldviews. We all need to be the good guys in our own stories; and anything or anyone that questions that self-image is a threat.

(And if that third party blamed is Evil Russia™, you can always portray your oponents as evil by association. In Spain's political life this is routine, with our small demons in the place of Russia).

I'd thought that soil erosion and the "accelerating extinction crisis" are serious enough, but I suppose that you can't add drama and build narratives around impersonal, slow and inexorable events; so they're barely mentioned at the end, and more than half of the article is devoted to Trump, Le Pen and Brexit. :D
