Trees have been dying prematurely EVERYWHERE around the earth, and the major underlying reason is that they are weakened from absorbing pollution. Bark beetles started killing trees in the 1950's in Los Angeles, due to the severe pollution there, and they are also right now killing pines in the southeast US, where is has been wetter, not drier, due to climate change.

Furthermore, it's not just bark beetles, every sort of pathogen has become epidemic on every species of tree, for the exact same reason. In fighting off the damage from ozone, they lose the ability to fend off insects, disease, and fungus.
