Today I've compiled a set of songs for Hard Times. Sometimes nothing much helps us get through life, but music has always worked for me, even when the relief offered was not nearly sufficient to compensate for the suffering involved. With life, we do what we can because it is what it is.
- Smile — Nat King Cole, the Charlie Chaplin tune from Modern Times (1936)
- I'm On Fire — Bruce Springsteen, from Born In The U.S.A. (1984)
- Dark End Of The Street — Linda Ronstadt, a live radio performance from 1973
- Boomer's Story — Ry Cooder's version, from Cooder's 1972 album of the same name
- Faded Flowers — Shriekback, from Oil And Gold (1985)
- Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground — Blind Willie Johnson, a song which Ry Cooder described as “the most soulful, transcendent piece in all American music.” I can only agree. Recorded in 1927.
Thank you for the Shriekback and Blind Willie Johnson in particular - both new to me.
Harry Nilsson - Everybody's Talkin' (1969)
