As winter turns to spring, my musical tastes shift to "lighter" fare, and nothing makes me happier than Brazilian music in the warmer weather. Most of you have probably never heard Bebel Gilberto, so this is your chance to hear her. She is the daughter of Bossa Nova great Joao Gilberto and the singer Miúcha, and was born in 1966. She has released 6 albums since 1986, but the first one I heard was Tanto Tempo, which was her "breakout" album in 2000. The only problem I had in making these selections was my desire to play every tune she's ever recorded. I wish I were on the beach right now, and not stuck in this shithole called Pittsburgh.
- Momento — the title song of her 2007 release
- Joao Gilberto — live on Brazilian TV, a look back at her roots
- Aganju — from the self-titled 2004 release
- Nossa Senhora — from All In One, released in 2009
- Tanta Tempo — the title song from her 2000 release
- August Day Song — from Tanto Tempo, live at the Montreal Jazz Festival, 2001
Bebel Gilberto led me via Bruce Sterling to Cibelle which led me to the Anthropophagists[1] and Suba. And his standout album, 'Sao Paolo Confessions'.
I must admit I have a soft spot for an art movement that is based on deliberately cannibalising other cultures. Anthropophagy - what a wonderful word!
