A favorite song of mine from the Great Depression that actually brings up hard times in the lyrics is "Street of Dreams," here sung by the brilliant Lee Wiley: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXbv5d-G1iA
Midnight, you heavy laden, it's midnight
Come on and trade in your old dreams for new
Your new dreams for old
I know where they're bought
I know where they're sold
Midnight, you've got to get there at midnight
And you'll be met there by others like you
Brothers as blue
Smiling on the street of dreams
Surprisingly rare to hear sentiments like that in the pop music of that era, "Brother Can You Spare a Dime?" notwithstanding; almost everything from the Gershwins and their peers steered clear of such weighty topics.
