Piece of the fracking puzzle you didn't mention: when everything goes "right" millions of gallons of surface and shallow water table water, after being contaminated with toxins, winds up injected a mile or more underground and mostly stays there. It's lost to the water cycle, for irrigation and drinking water supplies: creating a "net loss of water" as one local official put it mildly here in Central PA.
